How to solve
The distributive property says a factor outside parentheses multiplies every term inside. Expanding turns a product of a sum into a sum of products so like terms and further simplification become visible.
Steps
- Multiply the outside factor by each term inside the parentheses.
- Write the resulting sum or difference without parentheses.
- Combine like terms if any appear.
Example
Expand 4(3x + 2).
- 4 · 3x = 12x and 4 · 2 = 8.
- Write the expanded expression: 12x + 8.
Answer: 12x + 8
How to type answers
- Enter like 12 + 8 or 12-8
