How to solve

The distributive property says a factor outside parentheses multiplies every term inside. Expanding turns a product of a sum into a sum of products so like terms and further simplification become visible.

Steps

  1. Multiply the outside factor by each term inside the parentheses.
  2. Write the resulting sum or difference without parentheses.
  3. Combine like terms if any appear.

Example

Expand 4(3x + 2).

  1. 4 · 3x = 12x and 4 · 2 = 8.
  2. Write the expanded expression: 12x + 8.

Answer: 12x + 8

How to type answers

  • Enter like 12 + 8 or 12-8
