How to solve

Replace each variable with its value in parentheses, then evaluate carefully.

Steps

  1. Put the value in parentheses where the variable was.
  2. Evaluate powers first, then products, then sums.
  3. Watch signs on negative substitutions.

Example

Evaluate 2x² − 3x at x = −2.

  1. 2(−2)² − 3(−2).
  2. 2·4 + 6 = 14.
