Arithmetic

How to solve

Rewrite both values in the same form (often decimals), then compare. With negatives, the number further left on the number line is smaller.

Steps

  1. Convert a fraction to a decimal (or both to hundredths) to compare.
  2. For negatives, the larger absolute value is the SMALLER number.
  3. Check for exact equality before reaching for < or >.

Example

Compare 3/4 __ 0.7

  1. 3/4 = 0.75.
  2. 0.75 > 0.7.
