How to solve
Divide to find how many whole times the divisor fits, multiply back, and subtract to get what is left over.
Steps
- Find the largest whole-number quotient q with b·q ≤ a.
- Compute the remainder r = a − b·q.
- The remainder always satisfies 0 ≤ r < b.
Example
Remainder of 38 ÷ 5?
- 5 fits 7 times: 5 · 7 = 35.
- 38 − 35 = 3.
Answer: 3
