Arithmetic

How to solve

Divide to find how many whole times the divisor fits, multiply back, and subtract to get what is left over.

Steps

  1. Find the largest whole-number quotient q with b·q ≤ a.
  2. Compute the remainder r = a − b·q.
  3. The remainder always satisfies 0 ≤ r < b.

Example

Remainder of 38 ÷ 5?

  1. 5 fits 7 times: 5 · 7 = 35.
  2. 38 − 35 = 3.

Answer: 3
