How to solve

The power rule says the derivative of xⁿ brings the exponent down as a coefficient and reduces the power by one: d/dx[xⁿ] = n xⁿ⁻¹. Constant coefficients ride along by linearity, measuring how steeply the monomial changes.

Steps

  1. For xⁿ, multiply by n and replace the exponent with n − 1.
  2. If there is a constant coefficient, multiply it through as well.
  3. Simplify the resulting monomial.

Example

Differentiate 4x³.

  1. Bring down the 3: 4 · 3 x² = 12x².

Answer: 12x^2
