How to solve

A ratio compares two quantities. Like a fraction, it is simplest when the two parts share no common factor.

Steps

  1. Find the GCF of the two parts.
  2. Divide both parts by it.
  3. Write the result with a colon, like 3:4.

Example

Simplify the ratio 12:18.

  1. GCF(12, 18) = 6.
  2. 12 ÷ 6 = 2 and 18 ÷ 6 = 3.

Answer: 2:3
